We had the pleasure of hosting a fantastic group of students from the University of Richmond in Virginia, USA. With some of the clearest weather we’ve seen in months, the group experienced Te Waipounamu / South Island at its very best as they travelled through some of the most remarkable coastal and sub-alpine natural environments.
Their programme was designed to do more than simply visit beautiful places. It aimed to deepen students’ understanding of the unique wilderness landscapes of Aotearoa while exploring different ways of relating to and caring for the environment. Through both Western and indigenous perspectives, students were encouraged to consider how culture, history and values shape our relationship with te taiao.
Throughout the journey, our experienced tutors helped foster meaningful connections between students and the places they visited. Shared challenges, environmental learning activities and outdoor adventures created opportunities for reflection, discussion and personal growth.
The group visited a number of significant locations across the top of the South Island and West Coast, including Riuwaka, Kaiteretere Beach, the Brook Waimārama Sanctuary and the iconic Pancake Rocks at Punakaiki. Each location offered a different lens through which to explore ecology, conservation, cultural understanding and environmental stewardship.
More importantly, these experiences provided a foundation for transformational learning. By engaging directly with the natural world and experiencing different approaches to environmental care, students gained insights they can take back to their own communities and apply in meaningful ways. The hope is that these experiences inspire not only greater understanding, but also action.
Programmes like this demonstrate the power of experiential learning to broaden perspectives, build connections across cultures and inspire a deeper appreciation for the environment. We were privileged to share a small part of Aotearoa with these students and look forward to seeing where their learning journey takes them next.
In keeping with the not-for-profit, charitable mandate of Whenua Iti Outdoors, 100% of any associated revenue generated through the ExpedNZ programs is directed straight into a community fund for the provision of experiential learning programs in support of the youth of our region.
